RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team held Saint Augustine's to just 20 percent from deep in a 4-for-20 shooting performance, but fell 76-65 to the Falcons on the road Tuesday.
The Lady Bears (12-14, 7-10) had two players score in double figures, led by Alexis Radcliff, who had 21 points and two steals. Lojain Elfatairy added 11 points and three steals and Camilla Barreno added nine points and three steals.
Shaw's defense held Saint Augustine's to only 20 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 39.7 percent from the field. The Lady Bears also limited Lauren Banks to 1-of-8 shooting from downtown in the game.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 10-7 advantage, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 5:18 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 15-7. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 21-15 advantage.
The Lady Bears could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 34-28.
Shaw came out of halftime on fire, going on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 34-33 with 8:42 to go in the third. Saint Augustine's countered and stretched its lead to 56-42 heading into the fourth. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
Saint Augustine's kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 73-51 advantage before Shaw went on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 73-58 with 1:56 to go in the contest. The Lady Bears kept their comeback going, but Saint Augustine's managed to hold on for the 76-65 win. Shaw took advantage of four Saint Augustine's turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of those takeaways.
