RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team held Saint Augustine's to just 17.4 percent from beyond the arc in a 4-for-23 shooting performance on the way to a 64-54 win over the Falcons on the road Tuesday.
The Bears (13-12, 9-8) had three players score in double figures, led by DJÂ Thomas, who had 20 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Denari Garrett added 10 points and seven rebounds from the bench and Ahmil Flowers chipped in as well with 10 points from the bench.
The Shaw defense was a problem in Tuesday's game, forcing 18 Saint Augustine's turnovers while committing nine. Those takeaways turned into 17 points on the other end of the floor. Thomas' five steals led the way individually for the Bears.
How It Happened
After falling behind 20-17, Shaw went on a 7-0 run with 5:42 left in the first half to take a 24-20 lead. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 24-22 advantage. Shaw capitalized on nine Saint Augustine's turnovers in the period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.
Following intermission, Shaw kept widening that lead, expanding it to 43-39 before going on a 9-0 run to grow the lead to 52-39 with 5:54 to go in the contest. The Falcons narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 64-54 win. Shaw capitalized on nine Saint Augustine's turnovers in the half, collecting 11 points off those turnovers.
