RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit at 35-25 with 7:49 remaining in the third quarter to take down the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls 62-56 at home Saturday.
The Bears (12-13, 7-9) had three players score in double figures, led by Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes, who notched a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Lojain Elfatairy tacked on 15 points, four assists and two steals and Alexis Radcliff helped out with 11 points.
Led by Ross-Barnes' five offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.
Shaw's defense held Johnson C. Smith to only 30 percent shooting from the field, including 26.1 percent from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After falling behind 7-4, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 4:53 left in the first quarter to take a 9-7 lead. The Lady Bears then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 13-9.
The Lady Bears continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 31-19 halftime deficit.
Following halftime, Shaw kept the Golden Bulls from growing their lead before going on a 9-0 run to trim its deficit to 35-32 with 4:49 to go in the third. The Lady Bears kept the rally going and took control on a Inari Jones free throw with 00:16 left for a 40-38 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Shaw scored five fast break points in the quarter.
Shaw kept widening that lead, expanding it to 54-50 before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 61-50 with 17 seconds to go in the contest. The Golden Bulls narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 62-56 win. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 22 points in the paint.
