Bears Drop First Home Game of Season to Claflin

RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team got a 36-point performance from the bench, but fell 77-63 to the Claflin Panthers at home Wednesday.

The Bears (11-12, 7-8) had three players score in double figures, led by Shayne Saigo, who had 16 points and seven rebounds. Denari Garrett tacked on 11 points and seven rebounds from the bench and DJ Thomas chipped in as well with 10 points from the bench.

Shaw out-rebounded Claflin 43-41 in Wednesday's game, led by nine boards from Jamari Roberts. The Bears also grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and scored 13 second chance points.

Shaw forced 20 Claflin turnovers while committing 18 themselves in Wednesday's game. The Bears turned those takeaways into 20 points on the other end of the floor. Ahmil Flowers' three steals led the way for Shaw.

How It Happened

Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 37-27 heading into halftime.

Shaw narrowed its deficit to 51-44 before going on a 9-0 run to seize a 53-51 lead with 8:28 to go in the contest. Claflin re-asserted control, outscoring the Bears 26-10 the rest of the way to hand Shaw the 77-63 loss. Shaw took care of business in the paint, recording 18 of its 36 points in the lane.
