RALEIGH, NC --Trent McIntyre scored 28 points to help lead the Shaw men's basketball team over the Elizabeth City State Vikings 83-66 at home Saturday inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Bears (6-4, 1-0) had four players score in double figures, led by McIntyre, who had 28 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. Dee Barnes tacked on 15 points and Dreveon Scott chipped in as well with a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Shaw grabbed 40 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Elizabeth City State's 26, led by Scott's 11 boards. The Bears also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 12 rebounds into nine second chance points.
Shaw forced 16 Elizabeth City State turnovers. The Bears turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. McIntyre's four steals led the way for Shaw.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 30-27 advantage, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 3:43 left in the first half, culminating in a three from McIntyre, to increase its lead to 35-27. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 41-34 advantage.
Following intermission, Shaw kept widening that lead, expanding it to 48-38 before going on a 9-0 run to grow the lead to 57-38 with 13:16 to go in the contest. The Vikings narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 83-66 win.
