RALEIGH, NC --Mahogany Collins, Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes and Maiya Bumbray each pulled down doble-digit rebounds to help lead the Shaw women's basketball team over the Bluefield State Lady Blues 82-52 at home Thursday.
The Lady Bears (4-6, 3-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Mikyah Finley, who had 17 points, six rebounds, nine assists and two steals. Ross-Barnes added a double-double off the bench with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Bumbray helped out with a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Shaw grabbed 61 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Bluefield State's 34, led by Collins' 14 boards. The Bears also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 16 rebounds into nine second chance points.
Shaw's defense held Bluefield State to only 11.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 23.3 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 11-10, Shaw went on a 9-0 run with 5:01 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Finley, to take a 19-11 lead. The Lady Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 28-21 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 28 points.
The Lady Bears used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 41-31 edge. Shaw forced seven Bluefield State turnovers in the period and turned them into four points.
Shaw continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kiara Shepherd, to expand its lead further to 56-42 with 1:41 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Bears added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 60-44 edge. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 19 points in the paint.
Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 12-0 run, finished off by Bumbray's layup, to grow the lead to 72-48 with 6:37 to go in the contest. The Bears kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 82-52 win. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 20 of its 22 points in the paint.
