RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team got a 24-point performance from the bench on the way to a 67-53 victory against the Lincoln (PA) Lions at the VSU Multipurpose Center Saturday evening.Â
The Lady Bears (2-0)Â had three players score in double figures, led by Keibra Hopkins, who had 22 points and seven rebounds. Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes tacked on a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Kiara Shepherd helped out with 10 points and four steals.
Shaw took advantage of excellent ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 17 assists on 28 made field goals. Individually, Skylar Adams lent a helping hand the most for the Lady Bears with four assists.
Shaw forced 24 Lincoln (PA) turnovers while committing 22 themselves in Saturday's game. The Lady Bears turned those takeaways into 21 points on the other end of the floor. Adams led the way individually with five steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 15-4, Shaw went on a 6-0 run with 1:34 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Adams, to narrow its deficit to 15-10, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
The Lady Bears then rallied, outscoring the Lions 18-9 in the second quarter to take a 28-24 halftime lead. Shaw forced six Lincoln (PA) turnovers in the period and turned them into six points.
After intermission, Shaw added to its advantage and owned a 44-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
Shaw started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Kaylee Milburn's layup, to grow the lead to 53-38 with 6:21 to go in the contest. The Lions narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 67-53 win. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 23 points in the paint.
