SLIPPERY ROCK, PA --Elijah Scranton pulled down 13 rebounds and Jermaine Vereen added 12 more, but the Shaw men's basketball team fell to the Pittsburgh-Johnstown Mountain Cats 92-83 at Morrow Field House Saturday.
Scranton and Vereen's fantastic rebounding performances led the Bears (0-2) in the contest. Scranton tacked on 10 points and Vereen added nine points. Dreveon Scott also helped out with 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Led by Scranton's seven offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 20 boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.
Shaw forced 17 Pittsburgh-Johnstown turnovers while committing 14 themselves in Saturday's game. The Bears turned those takeaways into 11 points on the other end of the floor. Scott's four steals led the way for Shaw.
How It Happened
After falling behind 28-26, Shaw went on a 10-0 run with 6:35 left in the first half to take a 36-28 lead. The Bears then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 44-40.
Pittsburgh-Johnstown kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 51-42 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Scott's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 51-47 with 16:40 to go in the contest. Pittsburgh-Johnstown responded and outscored the Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 92-83. Shaw got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 15 of its 43 total points.
