FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina --Shaw put together a 13-play, 80-yard drive, culminating in a three-yard rushing touchdown from with :35 left in the ballgame to give the Bears a 38-35 win over Fayetteville State on Saturday afternoon at Luther "Nick" Jeralds.
The Bears improved to 5-4 on the year and 3-3 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play, while the Broncos fell to 3-4 and 2-3.
The win snaps an 11 year losing streak against FSU giving Shaw its first win in the series since 2013 also in Fayetteville.Â
Christian Peters led Shaw's passing attack with 238 yards through the air, tossing one touchdown without throwing an interception. The signal caller also added one touchdown on the ground.
Travon Tensley totaled 115 yards to lead the Bears' ground attack and added one touchdown in the game, picking up 4.3 yards per carry along the way. Jatoine Fields also tacked on 27 yards and one touchdown on the ground, picking up 4.5 yards per carry.
Maceo Wingate hauled in five catches for 90 yards and one score. Ah'shaan Belcher made his presence felt in the passing game, recording five receptions for 79 yards.
Sincyr Williams and Mehki Dunlap added one recovered fumble while Dyllan Jones led the way in tackles with 7 total followed by Jaden Jones and Keshaun Denham with six.Â
The Bears won the turnover battle in Saturday's game, forcing two turnovers while coughing the ball up one time, with Shaw turning those takeaways into 10 points. The Shaw offense did a good job keeping drives alive, converting on 53.3 percent of third-down attempts.
Defensively, Shaw held up fairly well against the Fayetteville State offensive attack, holding the Broncos to 320 total yards.
How It Happened
After Fayetteville State opened up a 14-0 lead, Shaw scored with 14:15 left in the second quarter to narrow the margin to 14-7.The Bears then scored again to narrow Fayetteville State's lead to 14-10.
After Fayetteville State scored to increase its lead to 21-10, Shaw scored again with :44 left in the second quarter to cut into the lead and make it a 21-17 game.Fayetteville State extended its lead to 28-24, but the Bears responded with a score of their own, a four-yard touchdown run from Tensley, to jump in front 31-28.
After Fayetteville State grabbed a 35-31 lead, Shaw responded with to a three-yard touchdown run from to jump back in front 38-35 with :35 left in the fourth quarter. FSU postitoned itself to kick a 44 yard field goal to send the game into OT with five seconds left but saw the kick land just before the crossbar.Â
