Pembroke, NC - The Shaw University Lady Bears volleyball team improved their OOC resume with two wins over the weekend at the UNC Pembroke Tri-Match defeating Young Harris College 3-0 before downing host UNC Pembroke 3-2 in five sets.
Shaw improves to 19-3 overall with the two victories.
Lady Bears vs YHC
The Shaw volleyball team got the job done in three sets (25-9, 25-22, 25-21) to defeat the Young Harris Mountain Lions Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
The out-of-conference victory improved Shaw's overall record to 18-3 on the season.
The Bears offense was paced by Leanna Beaty, who finished with 10 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .471. Khamare Steppe added 10 and Amari Earl chipped in with 10 as part of balanced Shaw attack. Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Kalia Morris had 25 and Maelie Chupin had 12.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Bears won the first point and held the lead the rest of the way to secure the first set 25-9. Shaw opened up its biggest lead, 16 points, to finish off the set, collecting 16 kills while only committing one attack error in the process. Shaw also supplemented their offense with four aces in the opening set.
SET 2 | Shaw built on a set-one win by earning a 25-22 victory in set number two. The Bears led from the first point on in the set to earn the victory. Shaw opened up as much as a five point lead at 23-18 before finishing off the set, collecting 16 kills along the way.
SET 3 | Shaw then finished off the match with a victory in set number three. The Bears the set the third set 25-21. Shaw took the lead for good at 17-16 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Bears took over in the second half of the stanza. The Shaw offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.
Lady Bears vs Braves
Maelie Chupin and Amari Earl both recorded double-doubles to help lead the Shaw volleyball team to a 3-2 victory (25-20, 19-25, 20-25, 25-15, 15-7) against the North Carolina-Pembroke Braves Saturday on the road at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
The Bears were led by double-doubles from both Earl, who had 11 kills and 12 digs, and Chupin, who had 14 kills and 16 digs. Khamare Steppe also added 10 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Kalia Morris chipped in for with 18 digs to go with eight blocks from Steppe.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Bears grabbed control on the first point and held the lead the rest of the way to win the first set 25-20. Shaw led by seven points at 16-9 before finishing off the set.
SET 2 | Shaw fell in set two 25-19 to even the match 1-1. Shaw trailed by as many as six points as North Carolina-Pembroke grabbed the advantage for good at 15-14 in a set that was knotted up nine times before the Braves took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 3 | Shaw fell again in set three to make it a 2-1 deficit. The Bears fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set 25-20.
SET 4 | Shaw broke their two set losing streak and forced a fifth set with a 25-15 victory in set number four. The Bears grabbed control of the set at 2-1 and held the lead the rest of the way. Shaw ended the stanza on a high note by opening up its biggest lead, 10 points, to close out the set.
SET 5 | Shaw battled back from down two sets to one to take two straight sets, culminating in a 15-7 fifth-set victory, and lock down the 3-2 win. The Bears grabbed the fifth set with the help of a solid showing on the attacking side. Shaw registered a .429 attack percentage with seven kills in the set win. The Bears ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza.
