ELIZABETH CITY, NC --Led by a 72.7 percent shooting performance from three-point range, the Shaw women's basketball team beat the Elizabeth City State Vikings 72-59 on the road Tuesday.
The Lady Bears (9-5, 4-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Alexis Radcliff, who had 18 points. Naomi Winston-Ellis added 16 points and three steals and Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes chipped in as well with 11 points.
The Shaw offense was very productive from downtown, knocking down eight threes on 11 attempts. Winston-Ellis was the most prolific shooter for the Lady Bears, draining four treys in the contest.
The Shaw defense held Elizabeth City State shooters to only 30.9 percent from the field, including 21.7 percent from three-point range. The Lady Bears also kept Maryam Hashim to 3-of-12 shooting and eight points in the game.
How It Happened
Shaw kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 19-16.
Shaw then started off the second quarter by going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Radcliff, to take a 23-19 lead. The Lady Bears kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 38-34 advantage heading into halftime. Shaw was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 22 points.
Following intermission, Shaw continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 50-44 before going on a 6-0 run to expand its lead further to 56-44 with 2:38 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Lady Bears added four points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 64-48 edge. Shaw took advantage of five Elizabeth City State turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of takeaways.
Shaw started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Lojain Elfatairy's three, to grow the lead to 69-48 with 8:03 to go in the contest. The Vikings narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 72-59 win. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.
