Defensive effort leads Shaw past Saint Augustine's 77-59

RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team kept Saint Augustine's to just 16.7 percent from deep in a 3-for-18 shooting performance on the way to a 77-59 win over the Falcons at home Saturday.

The Bears (10-8, 6-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Shayne Saigo, who had 20 points. DJ Thomas tacked on 13 points and Trent McIntyre added seven points, six rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

Saigo pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead the Shaw offense which grabbed 16 boards and turned them into 15 second chance points.

Shaw forced 19 Saint Augustine's turnovers while committing 14 themselves in Saturday's game. The Bears turned those takeaways into 13 points on the other end of the floor. McIntyre's five steals led the way for Shaw.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 10-9 advantage, Shaw went on a 6-0 run with 13:52 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Saigo, to increase its lead to 16-9. The Bears then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 35-27 advantage. Shaw took advantage of nine offensive rebounds to score seven second chance points out of 35 total in the period

Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 58-44 with 8:04 to go in the contest. The Bears kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 77-59 win. Shaw got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 20 of its 42 total points.
