Missed Free Throws Hurt Lady Bears Against #22 Broncos

FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team held Fayetteville State to just 17.2 percent from 3-point range in a 5-for-29 shooting performance, but fell 75-67 to the Broncos on the road Wednesday.

Shaw missed out on some key chances not cashing in on free throw line trips as they finished just 4-13 from the charity stripe. 

The Lady Bears (9-7, 4-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Alexis Radcliff, who had 24 points, nine rebounds and two steals against her former squad. Lojain Elfatairy added 11 points and four assists off of the bench and Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes added five points, two steals and three blocks.

Radcliff pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Shaw, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 14 second chance points.

Shaw's defense held Fayetteville State to only 17.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 37.8 percent from the field. The Lady Bears also limited Aniylah Bryant to 1-of-10 shooting from downtown in the game.

How It Happened

After falling behind 3-2, Shaw went on a 9-0 run with 8:17 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Ross-Barnes, to take an 11-3 lead. The Lady Bears then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 25-14 advantage. Shaw did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 25 points close to the basket.

Shaw kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 1:47 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Radcliff, to increase its lead to 37-27. The Broncos cut into that lead, but the Lady Bears still enjoyed a 37-29 advantage heading into halftime. Shaw dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 12 points close to the basket.

Shaw then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Broncos 56-52 entering the fourth. Shaw knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 15 total points.

Shaw came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Radcliff's layup, to seize a 57-56 lead with 8:49 to go in the contest. Fayetteville State re-asserted control, outscoring the Bears 19-10 the rest of the way to hand Shaw the 75-67 loss. Shaw fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
