Lady Bears Earn Three-Set Sweep Over West Virginia State

MOUNT OLIVE, NC -- The Shaw volleyball team earned a three-set victory (25-15, 25-19, 25-17) over the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets on Friday in the Mount Olive Invitational at Kornegay Arena. 

The non-conference victory improved Shaw's overall record to 3-2 on the season.

The Lady Bears were led by Noelani Beard, who registered  a match-high 16 kills and 12 digs on the day. Lillian Carlson added eight kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Jasmine Culp chipped in 14 digs to go with four blocks from Hailey Hopkins.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Lady Bears never trailed to win the first set 25-15. Shaw led by 10 points at 24-14 before closing out the set, totaling 16 kills in the set. Shaw also supplemented its offense with three aces in the opening set.

SET 2 | Shaw continued to roll after a set-one win by earning a 25-19 victory in the second set. The Lady Bears took control of the set early on at 2-1 and never trailed. Shaw led by as many as seven points at 11-4 before finishing off the set, collecting 19 kills in the process.

SET 3 | Shaw then sealed the sweep with a victory in set number three. The Lady Bears scored first and never trailed in the set to secure a 25-17 victory. Shaw opened up as much as a nine-point lead at 24-15 before closing out the set. The Shaw offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.
