Lady Bears Earn Four-Set Win Against Newberry

MOUNT OLIVE, NC -- The Shaw volleyball team needed just four sets (25-10, 27-25, 15-25, 25-22, 25-22) to defeat the Newberry Wolves Friday at Kornegay Arena on the first day of the Mount Olive Invitational. 

The win was the second of the day for the Lady Bears, who topped West Virginia State earlier in three sets. Shaw is on a three-match win streak.

The out-of-conference win improved Shaw's overall record to 4-2 on the season.

The Lady Bears were led by a double-double from Lillian Carlson, who registered 16 kills and 10 digs. Kamille Patrick added 14 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Lauren Janok chipped in 13 digs to go with three blocks from Patrick.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Lady Bears took control of the set-one lead at 2-1 and never trailed to win 25-10. Shaw opened up its biggest lead, 15 points, to finish off the set. The Lady Bears total 15 kills with a .619 attack percentage while only registering two attack errors in the process. Shaw also supplemented its offense with three aces in the opening set.

SET 2 | After its win in the first set, Shaw put itself on the cusp of a sweep with a 27-25 victory in set number two. The Lady Bears rallied after being down as many as seven points at 10-3 to win the set. Shaw jumped in front 26-25 and held on for the victory, collecting 18 kills along the way. Shaw's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Newberry attacks in the stanza.

SET 3 | Shaw couldn't finish off the sweep, losing the third set to make its lead two sets to one in the match. The Lady Bears dropped the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set 25-15.

SET 4 | Shaw then responded to close out the match with a 25-22 set-four victory. The Lady Bears persevered in a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured five lead changes and was tied seven times. Neither team was able to grab a lead larger than four points along the way. The Lady Bears win came in a stanza where 20 of their 25 points came via the kill.
