Shaw Routs Carlow 5-0 To Remain Unbeaten

DURHAM, NC - The Shaw women's soccer team took advantage of its depth in the heat to topple Carlow (Pa.) 5-0 at Durham County Memorial Stadium on Tuesday.

The Lady Bears (3-0 overall) scored four goals in the second half to pull away from the Celtics (0-2-1 overall). Five different players scored for Shaw, off to its best start since 2018 when the Lady Bears began 6-0.

The contest was close in the first half. The only score came from Kayly Pestrana, who kicked the ball in the goal from about 35 yards right before halftime.

The second half was all Shaw. Johanna Lillja started the onslaught with a goal on an assist from Matilde Strocchi, who later added a goal for a 3-0 lead. Alondra Lares assisted on Strocchi's goal.

Shaw put the contest away on two late goals. Rhianna Smith scored on Joseline Becerra's assist for a 4-0 lead and Thea Schillaci added an unassisted goal from about 10 yards.

The defense was equally impressive as the Lady Bears outshot Carlow 28-2. Winning goalkeeper Nyasia Hawkins recorded one save on two shot attempts.

The Lady Bears will play their second home game in two days Wednesday against Francis Marion. Game time is 5 p.m. at Durham County Memorial Stadium
