DURHAM, NC - The Shaw women's soccer team gained an early lead but eventually lost to Francis Marion 3-1 at Durham County Stadium on Wednesday.
The defeat was the first for the Lady Bears, who are now 3-1 overall. Even with the loss, they are off to their best start since 2018.
The game began impressively for Shaw.
Alondra Lares scored on a header off a nice assist from
Sina Kummerow on a corner kick in the opening minute. The lead stayed 1-0 until the second half when the Patriots (2-0 overall) scored three second half goals for the win.
The Lady Bears held the edge in shots (14-7) and corner kicks (6-3) in the loss. Francis Marion committed 12 fouls to Shaw's 8.
Shaw is back in action this weekend on the road. On Saturday, Sept. 9, the Lady Bears take on Regent in Virginia Beach Va., at 6 p.m. The following day on Sunday, Sept. 10, they play Washington Adventist in Takoma Park, Md., at 4 p.m.
