Lady Bears Secure Three-Set Sweep Over Johnson C. Smith

CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Shaw volleyball team secured a three-set CIAA Southern Division victory (25-18, 25-10, 25-21) over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls Wednesday on the road at Brayboy Gym.

The win boosted the Lady Bears' record to 13-4 overall and 6-0 in CIAA action. The Golden Bears dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the CIAA. 

Amari Earl finished with 12 kills in her hometown of Charlotte, NC, to lead the Lady Bears attack. Shaw got 20 digs from Jasmine Culp to lead the team defensively.

Game Notes

» Myazia West had a team-high three aces in the win.
» Shaw never trailed on the way to winning the second set 25-10.
» Shaw served up seven aces on the way to a second-set victory.
» Amari Earl had a match-high 12 kills for Shaw.
» Shaw got a match-high 20 digs from Jasmine Culp.
» Shaw attackers were helped by a match-high 17 assists each from Manuela Cripa Nasser and Lauren Janok.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Lady Bears seized an early lead, easily winning the first set 25-18. Shaw grabbed the advantage for good at 13-12 in a set that had just one lead change before the Lady Bears took over the lead. The Lady Bears opening set win came in a stanza where 19 of their 25 points came via the kill.

SET 2 | Shaw continued to roll after a set-one win by earning a 25-10 victory in the second set. The Lady Bears took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to secure the victory. Shaw opened up as much as a 16-point lead at 21-5 before closing out the set. The Shaw offense also got a boost from seven aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Shaw then sealed the sweep with a victory in set number three. The Lady Bears persevered in a back-and-forth set to win 25-21 in a stanza that featured five lead changes and was tied five times. Neither team opened up a lead of more than four points along the way.

Up Next

The Lady Bears travel to Petersburg, Va., to play in the CIAA Roundup I at Virginia State on Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Shaw will face three cross divisional opponents - Bluefield State (10 a.m.) and Virginia Union (6 p.m.) on Saturday and Bowie State (3 p.m.) on Sunday.
