DURHAM, NC – Two late scores broke a tie game and gave the Shaw women's soccer team a 4-2 victory over West Virginia Tech at Durham County Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The Lady Bears remain unbeaten after two games.
Despite controlling both the first and second halves, the Lady Bears found themselves tied 2-2 in the contest even though they outshot their opponent 34-3. Their scoring chances paid off in the final eight minutes.
Avril Melilo scored on a nifty shot from the left side on an assist from Daricia Arrindel to put the Lady Bears ahead 3-2. With 5:46 left,
Alondra Lares scored an unassisted goal for the final 4-2 score.
In addition to outshooting West Virginia Tech, the Lady Bears had more corner kicks (13 to 1). West Virginia Tech committed five fouls to Shaw's four.
In the first half, the contest was scoreless until the 3:38 mark when
Kira Schulte scored on an assist from
Brianna Garbrandt. The goal gave the Lady Bears a 1-0 lead entering halftime.
Giovanna Coghetto scored early in the second half on
Johanna Lillja's assist for a 2-0 Shaw lead. Though West Virginia Tech scored twice to tie the game, the Lady Bears were able to pull away down the stretch.
Shaw is back at Durham County Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 5, against Carlow (Pa.). The contest starts at 4 p.m.
