ETTRICK, VA - Gionvanna Coghetto scored a hat trick (three goals) to lead Shaw past Virginia State 6-1 in women's soccer action Saturday at Rogers Stadium.
Coghetto added an assist for the Lady Bears, who improved to 5-2 with the win. Virginia State fell to 1-3 in the first meeting between both programs.
Avril Melilo contributed a goal and an assist for Shaw, which outshot the Trojans 23-6.
Jasmine Brake and
Daricia Arrindell also scored in the match.Â
Coghetto scored early for a 1-0 Shaw lead. Brake and Arrindell later scored for a 3-0 halftime margin. Melilo assisted Brake's goal and
Leila Soto assisted Arrindell's goal.
Coghetto scored two goals in the second half for a 5-0 lead. Melilo scored Shaw's last goal on Coghetto's assist. The Trojans scored late for the game's final goal.
The Lady Bears finished with more corner kicks (10-0) and less fouls (6-7) than the Trojans. Shaw goalkeeper
Andrea Fernandez had two saves on six Virginia State shots.
Shaw will play again Wednesday, Sept. 20, on the road against Bluefield State in Bluefield, WV. The match begins at 2 p.m.
