BLUEFIELD, WVA - A late goal by
Johanna Lillja gave Shaw a 2-1 women's soccer win over Bluefield State at East River Soccer Complex on Wednesday. The Lady Bears improved to 6-2 while Bluefield State dropped to 2-4 overall.
Lillja scored in the 82nd minute to break a 1-1 tie. She kicked the ball in an empty net after using a nifty move to outfake the charging goalkeeper, who came out the box. The goal was Lillja's third this season.
After a scoreless first half, Bluefield State got on the scoreboard first at the 47:24 mark. The Lady Bears knotted the score at the 49:07 mark on
Daricia Arrindell's second goal of the season. Lillja later followed with her game-winning goal for the Lady Bears' second straight win.
Lillja and Arrindell led a Shaw offense that outshot the Blues 25-10, including 14-6 in the second half. The corner kicks were nearly even with the Blues holding a 4-3 edge, and Bluefield State was whistled for more fouls (9-5).
Paige Ellis was the winning goalkeeper with four saves.
Shaw is back on the road Saturday, Sept. 23, against Allen in Columbia, SC. The contest starts at 3 p.m.
