Lady Bears Split Two Matches on First Day of ShawU Invitational

RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw volleyball team got the job done in three sets (25-23, 25-16, 25-17) to beat the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons on Friday in the ShawU Invitational at home at C C Spalding Gymnasium. Later in the day, the Lady Bears jumped ahead 1-0, but couldn't hang on and fell in four sets (25-15, 22-25, 19-25, 20-25) to the Mount Olive Trojans.

The Lady Bears' overall record is 10-3 on the season.

Shaw vs. Saint Augustine's

The Lady Bears were led by a double-double from Noelani Beard, who registered 16 kills and 12 digs on the day. Lillian Carlson also added nine kills to help the attack. Kamille Patrick also pitched in with nine kills in the contest. On the defensive end, Lauren Janok chipped in nine digs to go with six blocks from Hailey Hopkins.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Lady Bears grabbed control on the first point and held the lead the rest of the way to win the first set 25-23. Shaw led by as many as eight points at 13-5 before closing out the set, collecting 16 kills in the set. Shaw also supplemented its offense with three aces in the opening set.

SET 2 | After its win in the first set, Shaw put itself on the cusp of a sweep with a 25-16 victory in set number two. The Lady Bears grabbed the set propelled by a strong showing on the attacking side. Shaw put together a .370 attack percentage with 13 kills in the set win. The Lady Bears ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza. The Shaw offense also got a boost from seven aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Shaw then finished off the match with a victory in set number three. The Lady Bears took the set 25-17 helped by a solid showing on the attacking side. Shaw registered a .389 attack percentage with 17 kills in the set win. The Lady Bears ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza. The Shaw offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.

Shaw vs. Mount Olive

The Lady Bears were led by a double-double from Lillian Carlson, who registered 13 kills and 10 digs on the day. Kamille Patrick also added 10 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Lauren Janok chipped in 14 digs to go with three blocks from Khamare Steppe.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Lady Bears jumped out to an early lead, easily winning the first set 25-15. Shaw never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 9-8 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Lady Bears took over the lead. Shaw got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked six Mount Olive attacks in the stanza.

SET 2 | Shaw then dropped set two 25-22, evening things at a set each. The Lady Bears came up short in a back-and-forth set, losing in a stanza that featured three lead changes and nine ties. Neither team led by more than four points along the way.

SET 3 | A set-three loss put Shaw down two sets to one. The Lady Bears lost a tough set 25-19. Shaw trailed by as many as six points as Mount Olive grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 in a set that was knotted up six times before the Trojans took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 4 | Shaw lost set four and the match, falling 25-20. The Lady Bears trailed by as many as six points as Mount Olive grabbed the advantage for good at 4-3 and Shaw was never able to recover in a set that was knotted up three times before the Trojans took over the lead.

The Lady Bears will face Alaska Fairbanks at 3 p.m. (EST) on Saturday, Sept. 16, in the final match of the ShawU Invitational. It will be the third of three matches on the second and final day of the ShawU Invitational at historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
