Lady Bears Earn Three-Set Sweep Against Claflin

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- The Shaw volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-13, 25-13) over the Claflin Panthers Thursday on the road at Edward L. Tullis Arena.

The victory moved the Lady Bears' record to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in CIAA play. This was their eighth straight win.

The Lady Bears were led by a double-double from Lillian Carson, who registered 14 kills and 10 digs on the day. Kamille Patrick also added 11 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Lauren Janok chipped in 10 digs to go with one block from Khamare Steppe.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Lady Bears jumped out to an early lead, methodically winning the first set 25-18. Shaw never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 12-11 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Lady Bears took over the lead.

SET 2 | Shaw built on a set-one win by earning a 25-13 victory in set two. The Lady Bears took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to earn the victory. Shaw opened up as much as a 14-point lead at 23-9 before closing out the set, totaling 17 kills without registering an attack error in the set. The Lady Bears hit .515 over the course of a set. The Shaw offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Shaw then finished off the match with a victory in set number three. The Lady Bears took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to secure a 25-13 victory. Shaw opened up as much as a 15-point lead at 24-9 before finishing off the set, totaling 17 kills along the way.

The Lady Bears will host the two-day ShawU Invitational starting Friday, Sept. 15, at historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. They will take on crosstown rival Saint Augustine's for the second time in three days in a non-conference match starting at 2 p.m. Shaw then faces Mount Olive for the second time in seven days at 6 p.m. Saint Augustine's faces Alaska Fairbanks at 4 p.m. Three more matches will be played on Saturday, Sept. 16.
