Second Half Surge Sends Bears Past Wasp

EMORY,Va -  The Shaw University men's soccer team used two second half goals to break a 1-1 halftime tie to earn their first win of the season 3-1 over the host Emory & Henry Wasp Thursday evening inside Fred Selfe Stadium.

The Bears (1-0) got on the board first with an own goal from the Wasp (0-1) inside the first five minutes of action. Grayson Cunningham would not let his team head into the half trailing as he found the back of the net with just over eight minutes left before intermission. The unassisted tally made the score 1-1 at the break.

Freshman Hoslerson Joseph picked a perfect time for his first collegiate goal as he found a pass from Tyrique Bell and finished with a goal just 3:15 into the second half. Shaw got the much needed insurance goal to ice the contest when Nathan Skeete converted a penalty kick in the left corner making the score 3-1 in favor of the visiting Bears sending Shaw to a season opening victory.

Pablo Bas Colomer was solid in goal for the Bears earning the win after collecting one save. Skeete led Shaw in the shot department with four while Joseph chipped in three shots. The Shaw defense limited Emory & Henry to just 9 total shots with two of those being credited as shots on goal. Both squads were whistled for 9 fouls with the Wasp earning six yellow cards compared to just two total by the Bears.

The road trip continues for the Bears as they head to Florence, SC to face the Francis Marion Patriots Saturday, September 2. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
