RALEIGH, NC -- The Shaw Lady Bears took a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hold on and fell 10-5 to the Bowie State Bulldogs Friday in Game 1 of a CIAA softball doubleheader at Worthdale Park on Friday. The Bulldogs entered the contest unbeaten in the CIAA.
The Lady Bears fell 10-3 in the second game.
GAME 1 | Bowie State 10, Shaw 5
Sophomore D'Amani Gadson (3-9) started and took the loss in the circle for Shaw. The right-hander went six innings, giving up four runs, one earned, on three hits, allowing one walk and striking out five.
Gadson led the way offensively for the Lady Bears, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Sas'Kia Stephens put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Nataya Truitt also helped out, going 2-for-4 for Shaw with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Bears trailed 1-0 in the sixth inning when they put two runs on the board. One run came across on freshman Ayania Williams' single.
The Bulldogs then rallied to score nine runs in the seventh inning and take a 10-2 lead before the Lady Bears scored three times in the seventh, which tightened the Bulldogs lead to 10-5. The Lady Bears were unable to get any closer.

In the batter's box, the Lady Bears were paced by freshman Olivia Ankrom, who went 1-for-1 on the day with two walks and an RBI. Junior Krystal Walker furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3. Freshman Ayania Williams also chipped in for Shaw, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Bears got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Shaw scored twice, with one run coming across on Williams' single.
The Lady Bears lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the fourth trailing 3-2. Shaw scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Ankrom, which tied the game at 3-3. Bowie State then scored seven times over the remaining three innings to break the tie and grab the 10-3 win.
