CIAA Women's Tennis Championship History
RALEIGH, N.C. (April 20) – The Shaw University women's tennis team begins its quest for a fifth straight title at the CIAA Championships on Friday, April 21, at the Virginia State Complex in Ettrick, Va.
The Lady Bears, the tourney's top seed, takes on No. 8 Elizabeth City State in the first of four quarterfinal matches on Friday. The winner awaits the victor between No. 4 Winston-Salem State and No. 5 Bowie State in the semifinals on Saturday, April 22.
Eight teams will compete in the two-day tournament. Teams advancing to the semifinals will begin play on Friday at 6 p.m. Finals action is slated for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with the awards ceremony immediately following the last match. The winner will represent the CIAA in the NCAA regional, with the NCAA Division II finals taking place at the USTA National Campus on May 11-27 in Orlando, Fla.
Shaw finished the regular season as the Southern Division champion with a sparkling 10-0 conference mark. The Lady Bears are 11-4 overall with three losses coming against Division I teams. The Vikings are 0-10 overall, including a 0-10 CIAA record.
