Seymour And James Post Double-Doubles In Shaw's 52-26 Win Against Bowie State

BOWIE, MD -- Brittiney Seymour and Rita James both recorded double-doubles to help lead the Shaw women's basketball team past the Bowie State Bulldogs 52-26 on the road at A.C. Jordan Arena Saturday.

The Lady Bears (12-12, 5-7 CIAA) had three players score in double figures, led by Seymour, who notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. James tacked on a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Makenzie Pollard chipped in 11 points.

Seymour pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Shaw, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into eight second chance points.

The Shaw defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 18 Bowie State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 11 points on the offensive end of the floor. Tanayja London's two steals led the way individually for the Bears.

How It Happened

Shaw started off strong, putting together a 12-5 lead heading into the second quarter. Shaw did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 12 points close to the basket.

Shaw kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 9:34 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 17-5. The Bulldogs cut into that lead, but the Lady Bears still enjoyed a 22-17 advantage heading into halftime.

Following intermission, Shaw continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 34-20 before going on a 9-0 run to expand its lead further to 43-20 with 59 seconds to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Bulldogs had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Bears still entered the fourth quarter with a 43-22 edge. Shaw turned six offensive rebounds into four second chance points on the way to scoring 21 total points in the quarter.

Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run to grow the lead to 52-26 with 33 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
