ETTRICK, VA -- Brittiney Seymour and Makenzie Pollard combined to score 34 total points - 64.2 percent of Shaw's points - in the Lady Bears 53-39 victory against the Virginia State Trojans on the road Wednesday.
Seymour led the Lady Bears (13-12, 6-7 CIAA) with 19 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Pollard tacked on 15 points and Inari Jones helped out with nine points, four assists and two steals.
Shaw grabbed 34 rebounds in Wednesday's game compared to Virginia State's 23, led by Tanayja London's 11 boards.
The Shaw defense held Virginia State shooters to just 26.9 percent from the field, including 20 percent from three-point range. The Trojans did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only three offensive rebounds and scored three second chance points while Shaw pulled down 30 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After falling behind 11-9, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 2:54 left in the first quarter to take a 14-11 lead. The Lady Bears then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with an 18-14 advantage. Shaw got out and ran in the period, scoring four points on the break.
Shaw built that first quarter lead to 26-20 before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 51-second mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Pollard, to increase its lead to 31-20, a score that would hold until halftime. Shaw was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 13 points.
After intermission, Shaw held on to its advantage and owned a 33-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Shaw started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 12-0 run, finished off by Seymour's layup, to grow the lead to 45-30 with 6:29 to go in the contest. The Trojans narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 53-39 win. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 20 points in the paint.
