RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Shaw women's basketball team fell short in a 74-34 loss to the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons on the road Wednesday.
Tanayja London led the Lady Bears (11-12, 4-7 CIAA) with 13 points, six rebounds and two steals in the matchup between crosstown rivals. Tanashia Hairston tacked on six points and Rita James chipped in four points and three steals.
Shaw forced 22 Saint Augustine's turnovers while committing 17 themselves in Wednesday's game. The Lady Bears turned those takeaways into 10 points on the other end of the floor. James' three steals led the way for Shaw.
How It Happened
Shaw struggled out the gate, falling behind 26-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Bears continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 42-14 halftime deficit.
Shaw's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Bears faced a 60-23 disadvantage heading into the fourth quarter. Shaw turned eight offensive rebounds into two second chance points on the way to scoring nine total points in the quarter.
Saint Augustine's kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 70-29 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Desire Short's three, to shrink the deficit to 70-34 with 1:38 to go in the contest. Saint Augustine's responded and outscored the Lady Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 74-34.
