RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team scored 50 points off of turnovers on the way to a 96-41 victory over the Morris Hornets at home Saturday.
The Lady Bears (4-2) had four players score in double figures, led by Mikyah Finley, who had 18 points. Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes added 17 points and Alexis Radcliff chipped in as well with a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The Shaw offense was very productive from deep, pouring in 11 threes on 24 attempts. Elisha Quinn was the most prolific shooter for th eLady Bears, draining four treys in the contest.
The Shaw defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 33 Morris turnovers while committing 21. Those takeaways turned into 50 points on the other end of the floor. Tre'Zha Muhammad led the way individually for the Bears with five steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 19-4 advantage, Shaw went on a 9-0 run with 3:41 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Quinn, to increase its lead to 28-4. The Lady Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 28-7 advantage. Shaw did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 28 points close to the basket.
The Lady Bears maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 38-21 edge.
Shaw continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 12-0 run to expand its lead further to 52-23 with 6:02 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Lady Bears added 12 points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 68-27 edge. Shaw knocked down eight three-pointers in the quarter to score 24 of its 30 total points.
Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 21-0 run, finished off by Indiya Spooner's layup, to grow the lead to 93-37 with 2:10 to go in the contest. The Hornets narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 96-41 win.
