Lady Bears Win USCAA Small College National Championship

PITTSBURGH, PA – The Shaw women's soccer team avenged a regular-season loss to Bryant & Stratton Syracuse with a 3-0 victory to claim the USCAA Division I Small College National Championship at Highmark Stadium on Sunday.

The national title capped the best season in the history of the women's soccer program, which started in 2017. The 16 wins are a season high for the Lady Bears, who took the NCAA Division II Independents Championship the previous weekend. Shaw (16-4-1 overall) finished the season on a five-game win streak.

"The team played some impressive soccer during the tournament," said Head Coach Randy McClure about the Lady Bears, who defeated Maine-Fort Kent 3-0 in Friday's semifinals. "They executed each game plan to near perfection, not allowing a single goal in the tournament. They also scored some fantastic goals, and more importantly received contributions from so many."

In the previous meeting on Oct. 1, Shaw and Bryant & Stratton were in a tough battle before Bryant & Stratton pulled out a 1-0 win in Syracuse, N.Y. On Sunday, the No. 2 seed Lady Bears turned the tables, holding their top seeded opponent scoreless while rolling on offense.

The Lady Bears built a 2-0 halftime lead courtesy of goals from Ellie MacDonald and Victoria Hines, who scored on a penalty kick when she was taken down inside the penalty box. Shaw finished off Bryant & Stratton, the two-time defending national champion, in the second half when Jasmine Brake scored off McDonald's assist.

Shaw dominated offensively, outshooting its opponent 22-8, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal, and attempting more corner kicks 5-1. Winning goalie Paige Ellis recorded two saves for the Lady Bears.

MacDonald was named Tournament MVP and joined Giovanna Coghetto, Hines, Ellis and Leila Soto on the All-Tournament Team.

"I couldn't be any more proud of this group," McClure said.
