RALEIGH, NC -- The trio of Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes, Madjiguene Pene and Camila Barreno each recorded a double-double to help lead the Shaw women's basketball team over the Mid-Atlantic Christian Mustangs 106-32 in its home opener inside historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Lady Bears (1-2) had six players score in double figures, led by Tre'Zha Muhammad, who had 24 points and two steals. Ross-Barnes tacked on a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds and Pene helped out with a double-double off of the bench with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Shaw out-rebounded Mid-Atlantic Christian 56-18, led by Ross-Barnes' 13 boards. The Lady Bears also grabbed 32 offensive rebounds and scored 29 second chance points.
Shaw forced 44 Mid-Atlantic Christian (0-2) turnovers while committing 15 itself in Saturday's game. The Lady Bears turned those takeaways into 61 points on the other end of the floor. Barreno's 10 steals led the way for Shaw.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 19-9 advantage, Shaw went on a 6-0 run with 1:57 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Barreno, to increase its lead to 25-9, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 25 points.
Shaw kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 15-0 run, starting at the 9:28 mark in the second period. The Lady Bears, highlighted by a bucket from Pene, increased their lead to 40-9. The Lady Bears proceeded to tack on nine points to that lead and enjoyed a 54-14 advantage heading into halftime. Shaw dominated in the paint, scoring 18 of its 29 points close to the basket.
Shaw wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 13-0 run to expand its lead to 67-14 with 6:21 to go in the third period. Before the third period was over, the Lady Bears added three points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 77-21 advantage. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring 18 of its 23 points in the paint.
Shaw kept widening that lead, expanding it to 95-29 before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Barreno's jumper, to grow the lead to 105-29 with 1:04 to go in the contest. The Mustangs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Bears cruised the rest of the way for the 106-32 win. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 20 of its 29 points in the paint.
