RALEIGH, NC -- The Shaw women's basketball team hit 6-of-14 attempts from 3-point range, shooting 42.9 percent from deep in a 58-45 victory over CarolinaU at home inside historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium Wednesday.
Mikyah Finley led the Lady Bears (2-2) with eight points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Alexis Radcliff added 13 points and seven rebounds and Inari Jones chipped in seven points and eight rebounds.
Led by Tre'Zha Muhammad's three offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.
Defensively, Shaw held CarolinaU to only 21.6 percent from the field, including 23.1 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-0, Shaw went on a 13-0 run with 8:24 left in the first quarter to take a 13-5 lead. The Lady Bears lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 20-13 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three treys to account for nine of its 20 points.
Shaw kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 8:20 mark in the second period - highlighted by a bucket from Jones - to increase its lead to 25-13. The Bruins cut into that lead, but the Lady Bears still enjoyed a 25-15 advantage heading into halftime. Shaw forced 11 turnovers in the period and turned them into five points.
Shaw wasted no time building its lead, going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a three from Muhammad, to expand its lead to 35-15 with 7:31 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Bruins cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Bears still entered the fourth quarter with a 44-28 lead. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
The Lady Bears then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Shaw got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring four of its 14 total points.
