Shaw Falls To Millersville (PA) 74-68 In OT

RICHMOND, Va -- The Shaw women's basketball team fell to the Millersville (PA) Marauders 74-68 in overtime at the Virginia Union Conference Challenge inside Barco Stevens Hall Sunday.

The Lady Bears (0-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Alliyah Chaplin with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Mikyah Finley added 12 points and Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes chipped in 11 points off the bench.

Shaw racked up 18 assists on 24 made field goals. Chaplin's five assists paced the Lady Bears.

Shaw forced 23 Millersville (PA) turnovers while committing 12 in Sunday's game. The Lady Bears turned those takeaways into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Camila Barreno's two steals led the way for Shaw.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 15-14 advantage, Shaw went on a 7-0 run with 55 seconds left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Chaplin, to increase its lead to 22-14. The Lady Bears lost some of that lead, but still entered the second quarter with a 22-15 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 22 points.

Shaw went on a 6-0 run at the start of the 5:16 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Barreno, to increase its lead to 34-25. The Marauders cut into that lead, but the Lady Bears still enjoyed a 40-33 advantage at halftime. 

Shaw opened the second half on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Alexis Radcliff, to expand its lead to 49-39 with 6:12 to go in the third. The Marauders cut into that lead, but the Lady Bears entered the fourth quarter with a 55-48 edge. Shaw knocked down two three-pointers in the third quarter to score six of its 15 total points.

Shaw then surrendered that advantage as Millersville (PA) forced overtime by tying things up at 64-64 by the end of regulation.

Millersville (PA) then took control in overtime and won 74-68.
