RICHMOND, VA --The Shaw men's basketball team got a 45-point performance from the bench, but fell 73-70 to the Virginia Union Panthers on the road Saturday.
The Bears (12-10, 5-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Caleb Simmons, who had 19 points. Shayne Siago added 11 points and Amir Waddell chipped in as well with 10 points and two steals off of the bench.
How It Happened
Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 44-27 heading into halftime.
Virginia Union kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 59-37 advantage before Shaw went on a 15-0 run to shrink the deficit to 59-52 with 5:42 to go in the contest. The Bears kept their comeback going, but Virginia Union managed to hold on for the 73-70 win. Shaw capitalized on eight Virginia Union turnovers in the period, collecting 12 points off those turnovers.
