RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team got a 24-point performance from the bench on the way to a 73-58 victory over the Bowie State Bulldogs at home Thursday.
The Bears (12-9, 5-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Jeremiah Pope, who had 17 points and two steals. Shayne Siago added 17 points and Amir Waddell helped out with 16 points, six rebounds and three steals from the bench.
The Shaw offense was very productive from deep, knocking down eight threes on 18 attempts. Waddell was the most prolific shooter for the Bears, draining four treys in the contest.
The Shaw defense held Bowie State shooters to only 32.2 percent from the field, including 27.3 percent from three-point range. The Bears also kept Quinton Drayton to 3-of-12 shooting and 10 points in the game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 2-0, Shaw went on a 9-0 run with 18:10 left in the first half to take a 9-2 lead. The Bears then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 33-32.
Bowie State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 35-32 advantage before Shaw went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Siago's three, to seize a 41-35 lead with 16:49 to go in the contest. The Bears kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 73-58 win. Shaw capitalized on 13 Bowie State turnovers in the period, collecting 17 points off those turnovers.
