LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA -- The Shaw women's basketball team out-rebounded the Lincoln (PA) Lions 41-35, but fell 73-55 on the road in a CIAA Northern Division matchup Saturday. The loss snapped Shaw's three-game win streak.
The Lady Bears (11-9, 4-4 CIAA) had two players score in double figures, led by Makenzie Pollard, who had 18 points. Tanayja London tacked on 11 points and eight rebounds and Rita James added three points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.
The Shaw offense was very productive from deep, knocking down nine threes on 23 attempts. Pollard was the most prolific shooter for the Lady Bears, draining six treys in the contest.
How It Happened
Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 23-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Shaw then cut the Lions lead to 27-18 before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Desire Short, to narrow its deficit to 27-23. Lincoln (PA) responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Lady Bears trailing 42-33 heading into halftime.
Lincoln (PA) continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 51-41 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Pollard, to trim its deficit to 51-46 with 3:50 to go in the third quarter. Lincoln (PA) countered and stretched its lead to 59-51 heading into the fourth. Shaw knocked down four three-pointers in the third quarter to score 12 of its 18 total points.
Shaw could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 73-55. Shaw took advantage of two Lincoln (PA) turnovers in the quarter, scoring two points off of those takeaways.
