RALEIGH, NC --Â Makenzie Pollard knocked down a game-tying shot with 37 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime, but the Shaw women's basketball team was outscored 10-6 in the extra period and fell 64-60 to the Bowie State Bulldogs at home Wednesday.
The Lady Bears (11-10, 4-5 CIAA) had three players score in double figures, led by Tanayja London, who had 22 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Brittiney Seymour tacked on a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds and Tanashia Hairston chipped in as well with 10 points off of the bench. Seymour added four blocks.
Shaw forced 16 Bowie State turnovers. The Lady Bears turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. London's three steals led the way for Shaw.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 12-11 advantage, Shaw went on a 6-0 run with 2:48 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 18-11, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Shaw did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 18 points close to the basket.
The Lady Bears maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 24-22 edge. Shaw dominated in the paint, scoring six of its six points close to the basket.
Shaw surrendered its halftime lead until, with the game tied at 28-28 they went on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from London, to grab a 38-28 lead with 4:42 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Bulldogs had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Bears still entered the fourth quarter with a 42-37 edge.
Shaw then surrendered that advantage as Bowie State forced overtime by tying things up at 54-54 by the end of the fourth. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
Bowie State then edged ahead in overtime, leaving Shaw behind 64-60 at the final buzzer.
