RALEIGH, NC - Makenzie Pollard scored 18 points, but the Shaw women's basketball team fell to the Catawba Indians 58-45 at Spaulding Gymnasium on Wednesday.
Brittany Seymour collected 11 rebounds for the Bears (0-3). Inari Jones chipped in four points and added three blocks off the bench.
Shaw forced 18 Catawba turnovers and converted them into 13 points. Mariah Holder led the way with two steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 13-3, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 1:57 left in the first quarter, culminating on a three from Pollard, to narrow its deficit to 13-8. Catawba (3-0) answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Bears down 18-11 entering the second quarter.
The Bears continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 31-14 halftime deficit.
Shaw's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Bears trailed 51-30 heading into the fourth quarter. Shaw knocked down three three-pointers to score nine of its 16 total points in the third stanza.
Shaw started the fourth quarter clicking on all cylinders. The Bears went on a 9-0 run, capped by Seymour's layup, to shrink the deficit to 51-39 with 7:01 to go in the contest. Catawba responded and outscored the Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 58-45.
