Shaw falls 89-88 overtime to West Virginia State University on buzzer-beater

INSTITUTE, WV --The Shaw men's basketball team fell to the West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets 89-88 on the road Saturday on Taevon Horton's buzzer-beating 3-pointer with just two seconds left in the game.

The Bears (0-2) had five players score in double figures, led by Amiri Waddell, who had 16 points and nine rebounds. Justus Baldwin added 15 points and DJ Thomas helped out with 14 points.

Led by Waddell's seven offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.

Shaw did a great job disrupting West Virginia State University shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Baldwin's one rejection led the way individually for the Bears.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 30-22 advantage, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 3:07 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Waddell, to increase its lead to 35-22. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 35-27 advantage. Shaw did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 18 of its 35 points close to the basket.

Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Baldwin's layup, to grow the lead to 50-38 with 12:35 to go in the contest. The Yellow Jackets then fought back to even things up at 72-72 and send the game to overtime. Shaw made the most of seven offensive rebounds to tack on nine second chance points out of 37 total in the period.

West Virginia State University then snagged an 81-79 advantage with 1:54 left in the first overtime before Shaw responded by going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Caleb Simmons' layup, to seize an 84-81 lead with 38 seconds to go in the period. West Virginia State University re-asserted control, outscoring the Bears 8-4 the rest of the way to hand Shaw the 89-88 loss.
