Shaw falls to Davis & Elkins In Opener

INSTITUTE, WV --The Shaw men's basketball team got a 30-point showing from the bench, but fell 83-71 to the Davis & Elkins Senators at Walker Convocation Ctr. Friday.

The Bears (0-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Caleb Simmons, who had 21 points. Amiri Waddell tacked on 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals off of the bench and Justus Baldwin added seven points and three steals.

Waddell pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead the Shaw offense which grabbed 12 boards and turned them into eight second chance points.

Shaw forced 20 Davis & Elkins turnovers while committing 17 themselves in Friday's game. The Bears turned those takeaways into 21 points on the offensive end of the floor. Waddell's three steals led the way for Shaw.

How It Happened

After falling behind 13-10, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 12:51 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Waddell, to take a 15-13 lead. The Bears then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 35-29 advantage. Shaw did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 35 points close to the basket.

Davis & Elkins proceeded to take a 45-40 lead before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Waddell's three, to even the score at 45 all with 14:07 to go in the contest. The Bears could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Senators outscored them 38-26 the rest of the way to hand Shaw the 83-71 loss. Shaw got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 24 of its 36 total points.
