Box Score Raleigh, NC – The Shaw University Lady Bears volleyball team took the short trip outside of downtown to rival St. Augustine's to compete in the SAU Quad Match Tuesday afternoon inside Emery Gymnasium. While falling in their first match to West Virginia State 3-0, Shaw was able to pick up their first win of the season over the host Falcons in convincing fashion 3-0. Shaw improves to 1-2 while the Jackets move to 5-0. SAU drops to 0-3 on the early season.
Versus WVSU
The Lady Bears put up a great fight to start the first set before a deep run by the Jackets allowed them to pull away for the 25-12 victory. Sets two and three mirrored the first with close beginnings with the third set being tight the whole way before WVSU closed out the sweep with scores of 25-14 and 25-19. The Jackets have failed to drop a set so far this season in five matches. Paige Worden paced the Lady Bears attack with five kills while Breelyn Clark tallied 20 assists during the contest.
Versus SAU
Shaw attacked from the beginning of the match eventually turning a 7-6 lead into a 18-10 lead before closing out the opening set 25-14. SAU jumped out to an early 8-5 lead in the second stanza before the Lady Bears were able to tie the score at 9-9 and never looked back cruising to a 20-12 lead and a 25-14 matching score to go ahead 2-0 overall in the match. The final set would be the most competitive even with Shaw going ahead 15-7 early. SAU battled back to tie the score at 15 all before a timeout propelled the Lady Bears ahead 20-15 followed by a set closing run for the 25-19 win and 3-0 sweep for their first victory on the season. Worden and Noelani Beard led the way with eight kills each followed by Kamille Patrick with six. Clark finished with a season high 36 assists bringing her total for the day to 56 for both matches.
The Lady Bears return to action Friday September 10 as Shaw faces the University of Mount Olive in their home opener. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
