PETERSBURG, VA. — Shaw University volleyball dropped a 3-0 CIAA road decision to Virginia State on Monday evening at the Multipurpose Center.
The Trojans took the match by scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-23. Shaw fell to 1-10 overall and 1-2 in CIAA play, while Virginia State improved to 5-7 overall and 3-0 in conference action.
Taelin Connolley led the Lady Bears with seven kills and added nine digs, two service aces and a block assist. Sydni Hunter finished with four kills and three total blocks, while Nevaeh Ortiz added four kills and nine digs. Justus Alexander directed the offense with 18 assists and added six digs and an ace.
Mary Barnes paced Shaw defensively with 11 digs, while the Lady Bears totaled 51 digs and five team blocks. Shaw finished with 22 kills on 112 attacks and recorded four service aces.
After falling behind early in the first two sets, Shaw battled throughout the third. The Lady Bears built a 23-21 advantage late in the frame before Virginia State scored the final four points to close out the match, 25-23.
Virginia State was led by Noa Roberts, who recorded a match-high 11 kills on a .296 hitting percentage, while Kellee Craig collected 21 digs.
The Lady Bears will return to action this weekend at the first CIAA Round-Up hosted at Winston-Salem State University beginning Friday, October 2.
