RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shaw University women's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over Chowan University Saturday afternoon at Worthdale Park.
The win improves Shaw to 2-4 on the year while Chowan falls to 4-6.
Saturday's match marked senior day for the Lady Bears who recognized both Eva Simo (Bafoussam, Cameroon) and Nika Tadic (Split, Croatia) prior to the match.
Shaw suffered an early setback, losing the doubles competitions. SU lost 6-2 at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. Simo and junior Thandi Kololo (Gaborone, Botswana) partnered at the No. 3 to win their match by the score of 6-1.
The Lady Bears regrouped in the singles competitions to display a dominant performance securing the win.
Notably, Simo, who went undefeated on the day, won her singles competition 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 2 slot. Tadic also put in a memorable performance winning 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 5 position.
Two Lady Bears played out three-set thrillers including junior Kundai Manyonga (Harare, Zimbabwe) at the No. 3 and sophomore Chetna Kumari (Gurgaon, India) at the No. 4. Manyonga's scoreline read 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 while Kumari's finished 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.
Additionally, Kololo won in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 6 singles.
Up next, the Lady Bears host Livingstone (Salisbury, N.C.) on Friday, Apr. 9. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Worthdale Park.
