RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shaw University men's and women's tennis team will travel to Danville, Va. to face the Averett College Cougars Sunday, Mar. 14 at 1 p.m.
The Bears enter the match 1-1 on the young season after falling 9-0 to N.C. Wesleyan on Tuesday (Mar. 9). Shaw had one close match in doubles play that featured duo junior Javier Godoy Gomis (Valencia, Spain) and junior Guillermo Franco (Sevilla, Spain), falling 8-4. Meanwhile in singles action, junior Martin Munoz (Bogota, Colombia) was the most successful singles player, as he suffered a 7-6, 6-4 setback at the No. 1 position.
Similar to the men, the Lady Bears (0-2) had one close doubles before falling 8-5 from the sophomore duo of Michelle Blaha (Entre Rios, Argentina) and Chetna Kumari (Gurgaon, India) at the No. 1 spot in a 6-3 setback to N.C. Wesleyan. However, SU was able to gather three wins in singles led by Kumari who had the largest margin of victory in the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 4 position.
The Averett men's tennis team stand 2-2 entering Sunday's tilt, the Cougars have lost their last two matches including a 8-1 setback to Christopher Newport (Mar. 13). As for Averett's women's team, the Cougars are 2-1 after a 5-4 edge over Virginia Wesleyan on Mar. 7.
