LADY BEARS SNAP SKID WITH 6-1 WIN AGAINST WINSTON-SALEM STATE

RALEIGH, N.C. – After losing two straight, the Shaw University women's tennis team was able to snap that skid with a 6-1 win against conference foe Winston Salem State University Sunday afternoon at Lions Park in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division match.

The win improves the Lady Bears to 11-6 overall and 9-1 in the CIAA while the Rams dip to 6-6 on the year and 5-3 in the league.

Still without junior Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia), the Lady Bears played with just five players and was able to secure a one-point lead despite the player shortage as Shaw claimed a 6-3 and 6-2 win at the No. 1 and 2 doubles.

The Rams only point of the afternoon came by default but the Lady Bears captured wins in singles No. 1-5, including a 6-0, 6-0 victory from senior Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) at the No.2 singles. Senior Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) was a 6-1, 6-0 victor at the No. 1 singles while freshman Kundai Manyonga (Harare, Zimbabwe) also grabbed the identical win at the No. 4 singles.

Freshman Eva Ostermeier (Munich, Germany) picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 5 position while junior Siria Dibe (Tucumon, Argentina) battled off a 6-3 frame early on for a 6-3 and 10-5 comeback set win at the No. 3 slot to secure the 6-1 victory and season sweep of the Rams.

Shaw will return to action on Apr. 13 at West Va. Wesleyan for a nonconference contest at 1 p.m.
