LADY BEARS TENNIS FALLS JUST SHORT AGAINST BLUEFIELD STATE, 4-3

BLUEFIELD, W.VA. – Momentum swung like the pendulum in a clock Friday afternoon, but the Shaw University women's tennis team was unable to keep it pointed their way at the end of a 4-3 defeat against Bluefield State College in its nonconference contest Friday (Apr. 19).

Shaw (12-9) fell behind early in a tight doubles point when the Blues (6-16) scored a 6-2 and 6-4 win at Doubles 1 and 2. The freshman duo of Kundai Manyonga (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Eva Ostermeier (Munich, Germany) did earn a 6-1 win at the No. 3 doubles.

Singles play proved to be a battle all the way to the end, as Shaw seized the momentum on multiple occasions. Senior Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) was a victor at the No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 7-5, and 7-5 battle to pull the Lady Bears within 2-1 of the Lady Blues while junior Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) knotted the score with hard fought in the No. 5 singles with a 3-6, 6-3 and 7-5 win.

Ostermeier won straight sets by the scores of 6-3, 6-3 but BSC secured victories at the No. 1 and 3 singles for the 4-3 edge.

Shaw's contest at Bluefield College scheduled for today at 10 a.m. had been postponed due to rain in the area.
