LADY BEARS HANG ON FOR 4-3 WIN AGAINST CHOWAN

RALEIGH, N.C. –In a match that was originally scheduled for a neutral site, the Shaw University women's tennis team survived at home to earn a 4-3 win over the visiting Chowan University Hawks Tuesday afternoon at Lions Park. The victory snaps a two match skid for the Lady Bears who now improve to 12-8 on the season while CU dips to 3-16 overall.

During the early going, Shaw trailed the Hawks 1-0 after falling 6-0 and 6-4 at the No. 1 and 2 doubles.

The Lady Bears pick up things in singles competition as senior Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position while freshman Kundai Manyonga (Harare, Zimbabwe) took a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 4 slot before winning singles 5 and 6 by default.

Looking ahead, competition does not get any easier for Shaw as the Lady Bears will travel to Bluefield State on Apr. 19, followed by a match with Concord on Apr. 20. Match times are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 10 a.m., respectively.
