LADY BEARS PULL OFF 5-4 WIN OVER BARTON

 

 

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's tennis team took a 2-1 advantage in doubles but had to knock off the Lady Bulldogs off Barton College on Monday afternoon as the Lady Bears (2-1) edged Barton (2-6) to grab the 5-4 win at Worthdale Park.

Seniors Daniela Vanko (Quebec, Montreal) and Marilyne Kamegne (Yaoundé, Cameroon) scored a win at the No. 1 doubles and senior Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and sophomore Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) earned an 8-3 decision at the No. 3 doubles but Barton grabbed a 9-7 win at the No. 2 doubles.

As the match moved to singles play, the Lady Bears were up 3-1 over Barton after Vanko took the win in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) at the No. 1 but the Lady Bulldogs went on to win three straight sets at the No. 2, 3 and 4 spots before Aleem and Fekete won their battle 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2, 7-6, at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively.

The Lady Bears will return to action on Thursday, Mar. 8 at Johnson C. Smith. First serve is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
