WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Shaw University women's tennis team defeated Winston-Salem State, 8-1 Sunday afternoon at the WSSU Tennis Courts. The Lady Bears won its fifth-straight and 10th conference match on the year.
Shaw (14-2, 10-1 CIAA) took a 3-0 lead through doubles action and led the rest of the match, which featured the Lady Bears winning five of the six singles.
Daniela Vanko (Montreal, Canada) and Marilyne Kamegne (Yaoundé, Cameroon) teamed up for an 8-2 win over the Rams at the No. 1 doubles while Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) and Helena Fekete (Subotica, Serbia) won 8-2 at the No. 2 doubles. Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and Andrijana Martic (Belgrade) took an 8-0 victory at the No. 3 doubles.
The Rams (6-7, 5-4 CIAA) lone point came at the No. 2 singles, where Jovanovic was defeated by Alexus Morgan 7-6, 6-1.
Shaw will be back in action Monday, Apr. 3 at Bluefield State with a start time scheduled for 1 p.m.
